B- brackets ( )
E- exponents a²
D- division (Order from left
M- multiplication to right)
A- addition (Order from left
S- subtraction to right)
Here's an example:
2+4÷2x6=
2+2x6=
2+12=
14=
Here's an image showing how it works.
Here's a video showing how to use BEDMAS
Here's a link to play an Order of Operation game.
Solutions to solve:
1. Annie has been asked to calculate 1.7+6÷2. She claims the answer is 3.85. Do you agree? Explain why or why not.
A. I don't agree because she didn't follow BEDMAS. Division and multiplication comes first then addition and subtraction If she did she would have got the answer 3.7.
2. Put brackets in the following expression to get the largest value possible. What problem solving strategy did you use? 3x2.8+6.4÷4
A. (3x2.8)+6.4÷4=10 I did the one in the brackets first but i rounded 3x2.8 to 3x3 which equals to 9. Then i did 6.4÷4 into 6÷4 which equals to 1. I added 9 +1 to get 10 as the answer.
3. Create a problem that can be solved using the following expression: 2.5+1.25+5 x 1.6
A. Jon was helping raise money for charity, he had $2.50 to start with the a man came in and dropped $1.25 in. 5 more people came in and gave $1.60 each. How much did Jon raise? He raised $11.75.
