Order of Operations (The Language of Math)

Order of Operation:
B-brackets ( )
E-exponents a
²
D-division

M-multiplication (In order from left to right)

A-addition
S-subtraction (In order from left to right)

Example:

Solutions to solve:

1. Annie has been asked to calculate 1.7 + 6 ÷ 2=___
She claims that the answer is 3.85.
Do you agree? Explain why or why not.

A: I don't agree with her because she did not follow the order of operations of BEDMAS and the correct answer is suppose to be 4.7

2. Put the bracket in the following expression to get the largest value possible.
What problem solving strategy did you use?3 x 28+ 6.4 ÷ 4 =___

A: there is 3 possible answer (3 x 2.8) + 6.4 ÷ 4 = , 3 x 2.8 + (6.4 ÷ 4) = , and (3 x 2.8) + (6.4 ÷ 4) = and all of them is equals to 10

3. Create a problem that could be solved using the following expression. 2.5 + 1.25 + 5 x 1.6.

Expression: Kenny went to a Department store to but his missing supplies for school. He has $10 in his pocket. 5 package of pen which was $1.25 each, a calculator cost $1.60, and the pencil crayons cost $2.50 would he have enough money to buy his missing supplies?

A: No, he won't have enough money to buy his missing supplies because in total it was 11.75 and he only has 10 dollars.
