Chapter 3. 1-7

1. Describes lines
that intersect at 90° 1. Perpendicular

2. Describes lines
in the same plane
that never intersect 2. Parallel

3. A line that divides a
line segment in half
and is at right angles 3. Perpendicular Bisector
(90°) to it

4. A line that divides a
angle into two equal parts 4. Angle Bisector

5. A part of a line between
two endpoints 5. Line Segment

6. Which of the following are parallel
and which are perpendicular?

Parallel lines are lines that never cross or intersect.
Ex:

Perpendicular lines are lines that intersect at a 90° angle.

7. Copy these line segments into your
notebook. Draw two perpendicular line
segments and two parallel line segments for each

A perpendicular bisector is this:

Question 8-10

For number eight you have to make two different method of perpendiclar bisectors

Method one

  1. draw a line segment
  2. sharp end of the compass
  3. make an arc slightly larger than half the length of theline segment
  4. repeat the process from point B with the same sized arc
  5. with a ruler join the two arc intersection with a atraight line
  6. now you have a perpendicular bisector

Area of a Triangle

Area of a triangle: Is base times height divided by 2.

Here's a picture that can give you an idea what base times height divided by 2 looks like:

Every triangle is half of a parallelogram. We know the formula to find the area of a parallelogram is base times height. So the formula for the area of a triangle is half the area of a parallelogram. Formula for area of a triangle is base times height divided by 2.

Height of a triangle is a perpendicular line from the base to opposite angle.

Here are some pictures for how it looks like:

Text Book Answers for Number 10-12

10. A parallelogram-shaped stripe is going to be painted on the wall of a daycare centre. There is enough paint to make a stripe with area of 9m². How high can the stripe be?
Answer: The stripe can go up by 6 meters how did i get the answer? i divided 9÷1.5=6 so the height will be 6
here's the formula:
Area of parallelogram
Base×Height=

1.5×6=

9m²

11. a) With a ruler, measure the base and height of this parallelogram. Explain how you measured it.

Answer: Base=2cm, Height=1.5cm. I measured the base with a ruler. Then used a protractor to draw the height perpendicular to the base and measure the height using a ruler.

b) What is the area?

Answer: the area is 3cm² since 2×1.5= 3

c) Use a different side of the parallelogram as the base. Determine the new height and calculate the area. How doe this compare to your answer?

Answer: The answer will be the same.

12. Which of the 2 shapes shown below has a greater area?Explain your answer

Answer: The are is the same because the 2 shapes has the same base and height so if u calculate it with the formula the answer will be 12cm²
