Algebra Notes


Equation-mathematical statement with two expressions that have the same value eg.
x + 2 = 3
y - 7 = (-4)

3a - 2 = a + 2
b = 4
Here's an example of an equation we had to model

Model: 8 times a number plus 4 is 12

Answer: 8n + 4 = 12


Here's an equation we got and we had to identify, the variable, the numerical coefficient, an the constant

5y - 6 = 19

Variable- Y
Numercial Coefficient- 5
Constant- 6

Opposite Opperations ( /- means divide)

Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators

Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators

When subtracting fractions its like adding fractions but insted you subtract the numerator NOT the denominator.

Here is an example we did in class...




And you see that the denominator did not change.

Here is an example of subtracting decimals but using pictures....

That is how to subtract decimals and remember don't ever change the denominator when adding or subtracting decimals.

Answer to Jomel's Question

Jomel's question: What is the probability of hitting green



My Answer: 4 favourable outcomes and 8 possible outcomes - 4/8 = 1/2 , 1:2 , 50%


Probability Question

Bob has a box of smarties and there are 15 smarties in them. There are 5 blue ones, 3 red ones, 1 purple one, 4 green ones, and 2 pink ones. Bob puts each colour in a pile around a spinner. Choose one of the 5 colours and find the probability of the spinner hitting that colour.

Order of Operations

B-Bracets ( )

These are some questions on, Order of Operations.


1. Anne has been asked to calculate 1.7 + 6 / 2. She claims her answer is 3.85. Do you you agree? Explain why or why not.

A. I do not agree with Anne, because she didn't use BEDMAS. If she did use it her answer would be 4.7.

2. Put bracets in the following expression to get the largest possible value. What problem solving strategy did you use? 3 x 2.8 + 6.4 / 4

A. I would put the bracets here, (3 x 2.8) +6.4 / 4. The strategy I used was that I saw there was multiplcation and I know if you multiply you can get a higher answer. Then I multiplied 3 x 2.8 and I got, 8.4.

3. Create a problem that could be solved using the following expression. 2.5 + 1.25 + 5 x 1.6.

A. John wants to buy a tool for work that is $11.75. But John notices he only has $2.50 in his wallet. Then John goes home and finds $1.25 in his piggy-bank. But he is still $8.00 short! So he decides to have a quick garage sale with 5 things in it that costs $1.60 each. At the end of the day all 5 items were sold and he got his $8.00. Then he goes to the store and buys that tool.
