Measures of Central Tendency
Measures of Central Tendency-a value that represents the centre of a data set.
(it can be the mean, median, or mode)
Data set- is a group of numbers that you must arrange in order from least to greatest.
example: data set: 2, 36, 8, 4, 7, 9, 5 = 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 36.
Median- is the middle number in a set of data after the data have been arranged in order.
example:

Mode- the most frequently occurring number in a set of data
(mode and 'most' both have 4 letters)
examples: 1) 2, 3, 4, 4, 4, 7, 7, 9. The mode is: 4
2) 1, 3, 6, 9, 10. The mode is: NO MODE.
Mean- a measure of central tendency the sum of a set of values divided by the number of values in a set.
example: 3, 4, 6, 8, 9
3+4+6+8+9=30
30 divided by 5=6
1) arrange the numbers in order.
2) find the sum of the data set.
3) divide it by how much numbers there are in that data set.
Range- the positive difference between the largest and smallest values in a data set.
example:

Outlier- a value that is much larger or smaller, than the other data value.
(the data set may have 1 or more outlier or zero outliers).
example: 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 34 = outlier: 34
Heres a question for you to try!
18, 19, 79, 17, 20, 19, 12, 19.
find the mean, median, range, and outliers.

Math Notes
Divisibility Rules:
divisibility- When a number can be divided by another number with no remainder or decimal.
divisibility rules-
2- all even numbers. (numbers that end in 0,2,4,6,8)
3-the sum of all the digits must equal a multiple of 3.
example: 93 , 9+3= 12 , 1+2= 3.
4- if the number is divisible by 2 twice. OR If the last two digits are divisible by 2 then the whole number is divisible by 4.
example: 124 , 24 is divisible by 4 so the whole number is divisible by 4 OR we can divide 124 by 2 twice and still have the whole number.
5- all numbers that end in 5 or 0.
6- any number that is divisible by 2 & 3.
8- divisible by 2 twice OR the last 3 digits are divisible by 8.
9- the sum of all the digits must equal to 9.
example: 18 , 1+8=9 225 , 2+2+5=9
10- all numbers that end in 0.
7- no rule, use a calculator.
0-nothing.
1- every number.

Area= B x H
Area= 5 x 3

parallelogram. The difference is the length of the
base, the height is the same.

Order Of Operations
Order Of Operations:
B- brackets ( )
E- exponents a2
D- division ----------- in order from left to right.
M- multiplication ^^^^

S- subtraction ^^^^^^

Here is an example we did at class:

1) Annie has been asked to calculate 1.7 + 6 divided by 2. She claims the answer is 3.85.
Do you agree? Explain why or why not.
My Answer: I do not agree because she did not follow b.e.d.m.a.s division comes first before multiplication.
If she did follow b.e.d.m.a.s she would have gotten 4.7.
2) Put brackets in the following expression to get the largest value possible.
What problem solving strategy did you use? 3 x 2.8 + 6.4 divided by 4.
My Answer: ( 3 x 28 ) + 6.4 divided by 4

3) Create a problem that could be solved using the following expression.
2.5 + 1.5 + 5 x 1.6.
Solution:
Jewel wanted to buy a necklace but it costs 11.75 and she had no money. On the way home from The Necklace Store, Jewel collected 1.50. But she was still short $8. So Jewel told her mother about the necklace and her mother said ill give you 1.60 each chore, so Jewel did 5 chores and she collected exactly 8$! So Jewel now got the necklace she wanted.
